the music from THE CONNECTION - Freddie Redd Quartet with Jackie McLean (Blue Note)
with
Jackie McLean (alto sax), Freddie Redd (piano), Michael Mattos (bass), Larry Ritchie (drums)

Recorded 1960

I have always wanted a copy of this title (on CD) but had not seen it in shops or listed online for a very long time, then out of the blue it turns up in the 'Jazz Steals' section on Amazon UK. I immediately bought a copy. When it was delivered I noticed the FBI Anti Piracy warning on the back of the sleeve and no security strip across the top so that raised my suspicions it was a secretly issued CD-R. Turns out it was a CD-R. The booklet/sleeve has been copied/printed with a matt finish which I think is preferable to the usual gloss finish!

It is sad when the main issue is this title is the latest now in circulation as a secretly issued CD-R, presented to the unsuspecting buyer as a genuine factory made CD.

Amazon are aware this disc is not a genuine factory made CD. This should be stated clearly on the product description page.

*Oh yes, the music. It is without any doubt another top notch Blue Note session.

An absolute classic of bop. Jackie McLean playing with great poise and imagination and that unique sound. This is an an unusually well rehearsed Blue Note group playing memorable melodies which they know backwards. It has been unavailable for a long time. At last I have been able to replace my vinyl copy which I wore out years ago.

The underrated pianist/composer Freddie Redd(b. 1928) is probably best known for writing the score and appearing in Jack Gelber's play about addicted jazz musicians, 'The Connection'.
This music from the play was recorded in New Jersey on February 15, 1960 with Redd leading a superb quartet including Jackie McLean(alto sax); Michael Mattos(bass) & Larrie Ritchie(drums).
The music stands up very well on its own with seven memorable Redd originals.
'The Connection' demonstrates Freddie Redd's talents as a pianist/composer and the passionate, straightahead bop on this album deserves a place in any modern jazz collection.
