These wonderfully expressive performances used to be available on the Royal Philharmonic Collection budget price CD and now it is released on a superb Hybrid SACD!
Menuhin has deep understanding of Elgar's music and the gifted cellist Yoohong Lee gives very deeply felt yet intellectually coherent account of the concerto with warm, expressive tone and noble poise. Apart from Jacqueline Du Pre's intensely beautiful accounts, this is one of my favourite performances of the concerto.
The performance of Nursery Suite is equally outstanding. The Serious Doll is played very slowly (3:26) with rapt wistfulness which almost matches the sublime EMI version by Lawrence Collingwood (available only on LP), and The Dreaming Envoy can not be played with more poignancy and poetic beauty. I've listened to Adrian Boult, Charles Groves and Bryden Thomson's recording of the work, although each one has its own beauty and merit, Menuhin's version is the one I love most for its depth of nostalgic feeling.
