I ordered this Sanyo VCR/DVD combination for my mother who is 85 years old. It took her several years to learn how to use a normal VCR, but I thought this would be a good idea for her as she now finds that some of the films she would like to watch are only available on DVD. She does however have quite a collection of videos that she wants to be able to watch. This combination solves both problems, and connectivity is easier too as it only uses one scart socket. The box arrived very quickly, and we set it up in about ten minutes. I found it very easy to use, The multi region hack worked just fine, and it plays all the region 1 discs (in colour) with no problem at all. The neat silver box, fits well into her "Victorian TV Cupboard" and having just one remote instead of an extra one is a great help. The picture quality seems fine on DVD and VCR. Perhaps it's not as good as on more expensive machines, but for the price it is excellent value for money, and very straight forward to use. Mother is still taking lessons on how to use it, I have made her a long step by step list of what to do next, but she's getting there. I would recomend this player to anyone who wants a simple multi region player combined with VCR. It has a high spec. and if you want to record TV and watch DVDs as well, it's a good space and money saving option.
Works well, but somewhat cumbersom to actually use, the menu system for the vcr is a bit basic and is only displayed on screen - the display on the actual machine is pretty redundant, and it has an annoying habit of fading to almost invisible when its switched off. The dvd works fine but loses the useful bookmarks as soon as the dvd is switched off so you can only interupt watching not actually stop and restart the next day for instance. The reactions of the menu are also quite slow. The instruction book is badly written so you are left to fathom it out for yourself a lot of the time and setting up the video with a scart lead especially with a digibox and tv was fairly difficult. Having said all that the results are good, 3d sound is a bit of a gimmick, memus could be improved but still worth 4 stars for the quality of the rcording and playback, which is after all what you want. Has a handy little gimick for playing jpg files as a slide show though thats excellent if you store you digi photos on cd. Good value for money if you dont want anything too sophisticated. One final really annoying thing is stopping the timer recording - you have to press the stop button on the remote for 5 seconds+ It dosent always work first time, and can be a real pain if you have set up a recording by mistake and want to stop it.
The product achieves its basic functions but the operating systems, the remote control and the instruction manual are badly designed making it very hard to use. The remote control in particular has small buttons of similar sizes with very hard to read lables. If there had been a picture of that on Amazon I may well have bought something else. Sony do this so much better but although good design doesn't have to cost more than bad design there is a premium to pay. I bought this for my parents who wanted to save space and I am still trying to complete the set up and help them learn how to use it months later. I feel that I got what I paid for with this cheap device and that was a false economy.
this model doesn't player region 1 disc as last buyer claims. it also has very poor color quality all red parts played in blue for some strange reason, with no means to correct this i contacted sanyo who just sais send it back, so i did. i'd avoid this if i were you
