Five stars aint enough for this. This is the most glorious music ever made. Loleatta is THE Disco Diva, and some of the tracks on here are not only the greatest disco records ever but the greatest records period. I can't urge you enough to get hold of this 2CD set. Even if you already own her disco smashers (like I did before I got this) it's worth checking out for disc 2 on here which is full of a side to Ms Holloway I'd never came across before. Disc 2 is full of her more deep soul outings, which are brilliant and show that she wasn't a one trick disco pony.
Loleatta Holloway had one of the great soul voices, and listening to this you can't help feeling she should have been up there with Aretha Franklin. Track after track has that distinction - a fierce energy, a wild sound, and the Salsoul production values set her like a diamond in platinum. The material is quite varied, divided between one disc of dance tracks and one of love songs. If you love Love Sensation this is a discovery crying out to be made - just sample Hit And Run on YouTube to be caught up in the irresistible vibe.
Loleatta sadly passed away this week and will be missed by soul and disco fans alike. Whilst this fantastic double CD collection does not include Cry To Me, Loleatta's pre-disco heart-wrenching ballad, there are plenty of knockout performances of the smooching or dancing kind to keep you engaged throughout this truly awesome Anthology. It captures the essence of this formidable, gospel-tinged singer, who put more life into a single song than most singers do in their entire catalogue. Highlights include, We're Getting Stronger, which was recently sampled by Whitney Houston on her Million Dollar Bill hit, Worn Out Broken Heart, the amazing Hit and Run, Runaway, Good Good Feeling, the gigantic Love Sensation - notoriously sampled and taken to the top of the UK charts by Black Box, My Way, Dreamin, and What Now. Frankly, there isn't a bad song in this collection, including Loleatta's gob-smacking version of I've Been Loving You Too Long. This astounding anthology is worth every pound in your pocket. Buy this Anthology today, your ears, heart and feet will appreciate it. There are many singers, but there is only one Loleatta Holloway. Grace Jones once said, "I can sing, but I'm no Loleatta Holloway". Rest in peace, dear lady of song and dance, and thank you for the music and the kiss... You're now an amazing angel.
