This is certainly a wartime film with a difference. "Advanced Base" is an Admiralty training film (made by Verity Films in 1943) and gives detailed information about the organisation, manpower and activity required to set up an advanced base for the Royal Navy.

Ships, landing craft, small craft, aircraft and an abundance of military vehicles star in this film as well as Royal Marines of a variety of different trades - and a lot of hard work!

Those with an interest in the history of World War 2 or the Royal Marines will find much of interest here. No classic footage of men or weapons in action and much more of the sort of activity that went on unsung in the war - and it is all the better for that.

DDHE is to be congratulated on releasing this unusual film.

Footage includes the following:

# HMNZS Kiwi (T102) - Admiralty Type naval trawler of 1941 (600 tons)

# Picket Boat L1 and Pinnace L5

# LCM 127 and LCM 122

# AEC Matador and other military vehicles

# 3-funnelled cruiser - probably HMS Kent, HMS Sussex or HMS Norfolk

This is brilliant if you are at all interested in military things. It shows in detail how to set up a port complete with defences. Its the best non fiction DVD I have seen in years. It is loosely based around Milford Haven.
