Having first come across this group on one the Jools Holland `and friends' albums, I fell in love with their distinctive sound and determined to hear more of their music.

The group have an incredibly long history, stretching back to the late thirties. Because they have so much experience and are so used to working together they are capable of producing simply sublime close harmony gospel with a streak of soul and the roots of rock. You can just feel their faith as they pour their hearts and souls into the songs, to produce some of the most classic gospel ever committed to tape. They have an absolute joy at making music that is totally infectious and will leave you feeling uplifted.

Not afraid to mix it up a bit, the boys have teamed up with rappers for `Demons' which works surprisingly well, turned to a Charlie Mingus composition for the title track and a Blind Faith number in `Presence of the Lord'. There are some traditional gospel numbers as well, the stand out being `Old Blind Barnabas', a track that just rocks along.

Going right back to the birth of soul and rhythm and blues, this is a classic album from a class act.

This band was formed in 1937 and two of its original members are still right there, still on the road. Contemplate that, Mick and Keith - you have at least another 25 years to go. And it seems they're just hitting their stride now. Gospel, like every genre, has its unique delights and its straightjacketing conventions, so the trick is to bend it without breaking it, keep it fresh and keep it gospel at the same time. The Blind Boys push with all their might at the boundaries with huge effervescence energy. They aren't tired, they aren't slowing down. Here's the mix for this album : guest stars David Hidalgo (Los Lobos), Billy Preston (ex-Beatles), Charlie Musselwhite (I thought he was dead); songs - Bill Withers' "Demons", Eric Clapton's "In the Presence of the Lord", Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" (yeah, that one, but this time it doesn't sound sappy), the 1950s Cold War classic "Jesus Hits like an Atom Bomb", and a bunch of trad stuff which nobody wrote. It's all mean and moody, fast and flashy, slam bang rocking and rolling, there's no hanging around at all. "Demons" is the standout for me, featuring rapsters Blackalicious doing some bawling for Jesus - the hip-hop witchfinder generals. This is gospel remixed by Albrecht Durer. If you like this sort of thing, this is definitely gonna be the sort of thing you like. I like this sort of thing. Gotta dock them one star though because as cds go it's very short.
