His Best Yet, But......
on 17 March 2006
I like Jack Johnson. I like this album. In fact, this is my favourite lbum from him so far. His songs are always great to put on when you want to chill out and wind down. Try getting road rage whilst driving to his albums, its impossible. It's nice that there are still a few artists out there that go for this type of music rather than cranking up the volume and trying to rock everyone out.
However, I can't help but feel disapointed, again, by Jack Johnson. This album starts of good, with nice simple tunes designed to take away all your problems, but by the fifth so or so you begin to feel as though you are listening to the same old stuff. Good stuff, but a bit repetitive. Just as a lot of young rock bands all sound the same, Johnson's songs all sound roughly the same, therefore you begin to tire after a few songs. This is definitely a case of the whole not coming near to equaling the sum of its parts because it is this same-old feeling that detracts from what could have been a four or even five star album.
Take each song on its own merit, most of them are very good, all of them bring about a calm mood within yourself. You can close your eyes and imagine yourself on a hammock in the Bahamas or Hawaii rocking back and forth to him play. Dont try and listen all the way through too many times as you will just fall asleep.
I can't help, though, and feel the potential for his next album. as long as he can diversify his tracks just a little bit then I think that Mr Johnson can notch up an even better album
In summary, very good tunes and atmosphere but unfortunately too much of the same old stuff. Still, his best yet.
