Der Kommissar - The CBS Recordings

this double cd set covers atf's 3 cbs albums and includes several live tracks and b sides. released in 1979 laser love is atf at their best and includes the minor hit single one rule for you, as well as the fantastic title track. 1980's 80f follows in the same vein opening with the title track a very upbeat synth-based instrumental, other favourites include starflight and wild west show. cd 2 is mainly made up from their last studio album batteries not included, highlights being rich boys, dancing in the shadows and frozen rivers. the bonus tracks include both versions of der komissar as well as a remixed version of starflight.the cds are brilliantly presented with complete song lyrics and a brief but informative history of the band from mark chatterton and longtime band associate mick farrar. this is the definitive atf collection and a must for all fans.

After so many years ATF recordings are available on CD.
The old album songs are great but what really makes this CD worthwhile are the live recordings as bonus tracks. Hearing the live recording of "Take me Higher" is so evocative - it makes me again a teenager intoxicated with high energy melodic rock praise !
A prize possession for any fan !

A welcome addition to the world of CDs. This release is long overdue but now that it's here, a word of caution. Whether this CD has been remastered or not is pretty irrelevant. The point is that the sound quality is really quite poor throughout, and if you listen carefully enough, you will hear on some tracks the stylus in a none-too clean record groove. What a disappointment after all these years of waiting. Der Kommissar released on the Epic label a few years ago knocks this release for six when it comes to sound quality. Nevertheless, it's good to have these songs on CD now and of course there is no doubting the quality of musicianship and songwriting. 5 stars for content - 3 stars for sound!

Despite disbanding and disappearing into oblivion in 1983 ATF still have a loyal following who have waited a long time for this ccollection. Shortly after Signs of Change became commercially available for the first time, the subsequent 3 CBS recordings are now on 2 CD's along with a number of live tracks, a couple of singles never on albums and a reworked version of Starflight. The music is fast and frantic and still sounds as fresh as it did 20 odd years ago. Fans of the band have been able to hear the re-formed group on 3 occasions in the past year, hopefully this release will increase the interest a bit more. Fantastic.

So, after so many years this music is now available on CD. This band missed out on much success not because of the quality of the music, but because of the 'Christian' tag and the inspiration of much of their music and lyrics. Don't be put off like so many were in the early days, this is really worth a listen - the music has survived remarkably well, and has definitely benefitted from the transfer to CD.
Great, great stuff - get out and listen.

I was introduced to ATF by a friend who'd bought a couple of their albums as they were released. My vague memories before buying this CD were of a band just too late for the new wave who made beaty, melodic pop. At first, it wasn't how I'd remembered them. The first album featured, 'Laser Love', is tame and insipid. The songs are OK without being outstanding, taken at a fast pace, but bereft of adrenalin. The problems, though, are addressed on the excellent follow-up, '80F'. A change of drummer makes a big difference, Pete King's style giving the sound a lift. Mack's production also has the effect of bringing out a more vibrant feel. The songwriting also improves, as does the lead vocal performance.

The third and final album featured, 'Batteries Not Included' is the culmination of these improvements. The songs are perhaps not quite as good as on '80F' but Mack has sharpened the sound a little more. Peter Banks' keyboard runs are the highlight of the early music and, while this aspect is consistent, the later recordings present a better balance between all the elements. The bonus tracks are unusually strong, though they include the band's biggest hit, their cover of Falco's 'Der Kommissar'. The live material, however, is more revelatory. ATF were no studio-bound band, they clearly thrived in concert.

As for the nature of the material, most of it is uptempo, the lyrics generally positive or prescriptive, though not especially memorable. Even so, this collection is largely uplifting, though you may find yourself skipping the early tracks.

I first bought the Laser Love single back in 1979 and have had copies of the first two albums in the past so this three album set is a real treat and well worth getting if you've heard of After the Fire or not. A great price for this as I've seen it being sold for three times the price elsewhere.

3 albums on a double CD plus extra tracks made this a very attractive buy. The mastering was obviously decent as the tracks sound good. Good to have the bonus tracks too.
