" Auchtermatic" is more than likey the final CD ever recorded by Scottish vocal phenom "Billy Mackenzie". His operatic vocals are all over this CD immersed with songs of grandeur, levity, dance, heartbreak and poignancy. Billy Mackenzie's voice could hit many octaves. I always prefered the tender ballads over the pulsating uptempo ones. Highlights are "The Soul That Sings", " Here Comes The Rain Again", "Velvet", "Norma Jean" and the ultimate Billy Mackenzie song aptly titled "Pain In Any Language". The incredibly talented vocalist died from a drug overdose in the aftermath of his mother's death. He spent his final hours and days with his beloved pet whippet dogs. Bono, Morrissey and Jim Kerr revered the late, great and kind Billy Mackenzie.

...that's what Billy's voice was. Buy this simply to listen to 'Pain in Any Language'. I'm told it was one of the last (possibly the last) vocals he recorded before he killed himself - well listening to the emotion in that song I can believe it. I've simply never heard a song like this.

its great to hear Billy Mc's sublime voice again , the Associates were ( are) one of favourite bands.
This doesnt sound like the Associates but its still a really nice sounding album.
I love the Alan Rankine / Billy Mackenzie sound best.

A great album, but not his best in my opinion. I prefer Beyond The Sun, but still definitely worth purchasing.
