Gargoyles is one of the most profound animations ever, heavy with themes that are not altogether suitable for children.
The story follows a band of ancient gargoyles who are now living in present day Manhattan, after being woken from their long slumber by Xanatos, billionaire and main antagonist. Thus follows one of the strongest arcs in animation.
Besides the fantastic plot and characters, Gargoyles aesthetics are something to behold. The animation is excellent and the dark score complements it beautifully. What really stands out, though, are the voice actors. The plethora of talent on this show is incredible, and ranks among the best in animation history.
Gargoyles is simply outstanding.

I often think the 90's were a bit of a golden era for cartoon series, with the like of Batman:TAS, Superman:TAS, Spiderman, X-Men and Batman Beyond providing entertainment for kids and adults alike.

Gargoyles was another one of these series which, unlike the others mentioned, was a completely original product.

Basically this is the tale of a species of creatures that live to protect the castle they live on, stone by day and flesh at night, and how they come to be thrust from their medieval home into the 20th century.

This first series provides an excellent introduction to the characters and sets the scene for series 2 very well.

If you are a fan of any of the other series mentioned then the chances are you will like this and fortunately it doesn't end on a cliffhanger so can be watched on its own.

This may be just as well, as only the first half of season 2 has being released so far with the chances second half appearing looking unlikely.

However, don't let that put you off as I would rate this amongst the top 20 animated series of all time and with the rare exception (such as Avatar: The Last Airbender and JLU) there have rarely been any recent offering of the same calibre.

Gargoyles has to be the best show produced by Disney EVER; the animation is superb, the writing brilliant, the voice acting unbelievable and the plotlines fantastic.

It wasn't just another run of the mill Saturday morning toon, this show had depth and meaning which made this show all the more enjoyable to watch on each run; each time you watch through this series I'm am certain you will pick up something new which you had missed last time.

Children and adults of all ages will love this show, the characters, their lives and the stunning New York backgrounds. Delicate themes like gun violence, hero worship, grief and death were handled masterfully by the Disney team to create a series in which the characters mature and grow as each episode goes by.

Gargoyles is NOT your typical Disney cartoon. It is dark, gripping and violent, yet full of powerful and emotional messages that the audience can gain from.
I became addicted to this animated seires in my early teens, and now in my late 20s, it still blows me away!

Gargoyles tells the story of a race of powerful and monstrous warriors who appear as lifeless grotesque statues during the day, but at night they come to life and use their strength and ferocity to to defend their medieval castle home from invaders. Under the leadership of the mighty hero Goliath, the gargoyles live in an uneasy alliance with the humans who inhabit their castle. And due to unfortunate and tragic circumstances, they are betrayed by the very humans they were trying to protect. Many of the gargoyles are shattered and destroyed during their stone sleep while the castle is overrun by vikings. Only Goliath and a handful of other gargoyles remain, and they are soon turned to stone permanently by a magical spell.

One thousand years later, the Gargoyles are discovered and transported to Manhatten during the mid 90s. The spell has worn off and the Gargoyles live again! Goliath and his friends are astonished by the advancements the humans have made with their technology, however, it doesn't take them long to realise that human nature has not changed during their 1000 year hibernation - the humans are as unpredictable and dangerous as they have ever been, fearing what they do not understand. Yet, Goliath still feels compelled to defend the helpless New York unhabitants from dangers that threaten them during the night. Can he hope to lead his fellow Gargoyles to a peaceful co-existence with the humans of this strange new world, or do they still risk being betrayed by the people they are trying to protect?

This animated series is not only action packed, but also emotionally challenging, and offers an observation into the human psyche that both children and adults can appreciate - how do people overcome their prejudices and learn to accept eachother? There are morals to be learned from this show, and plenty of thrills to experience along the way. The action scenes range from medieval swordfights and castle sieges to explosive modern day battles with high tech weaponry. Are the Gargoyles just savage beasts and monsters, or are humans the true beasts for trying to destroy them or use them for their own purposes? Find out for yourself as you become absorbed into each exciting episode that continually takes its story to new heights that other animate shows haven't achieved before... or since.

Gargoyles has it all. The characters are vibrant, the backgrounds are stunning and voice acting is top-notch. you may well recognise a few celebrity voices from well-known TV shows and movies.

The DVDs also include some decent bonus material, such as a commentary for the first 5 episodes, the original pitch showing the early stages of the show's concept creation, and a documentary featuring the show's fandom as well as talks from the creator and Goliath's voice actor Keith David (The Thing, Armaggeddon, Pitch Black)

Aside from the dark and serious nature of this series, there is plenty of fish-out-of-water type humour to be enjoyed as the Gargoyles struggle to adapt to their new lives in the big city.
So, if you like Batman The animated series and the mythology of DC comics: watch Gargoyles. If you like superhero movies like Hellboy, Thor, Incredible Hulk and X-Men: watch Gargoyles. If you want something that cleverly blends mythology and folk tales with modern day high tech gadgets and police drama: watch Gargoyls. You will not be disappointed!
