The ninth CD in the series is yet another outstanding performance of the complete works of one of England's greatest ever composers. The Cardinall's Musick master the dense intricate polyphony, wide vocal ranges and differing moods perfectly. The Propers for Ascension and Pentecost are lively, joyful and at times almost jocular. This contrasts with the meditative and introspective Propers for Corpus Christi and the Devotions to the Blessed Sacrament. A real bonus on this CD is the penultimate track "Ave verum corpus" one of Byrd's best known compositions. It is so simple yet stunningly beautiful. A devout catholic Byrd had a great knowledge of the Scriptures and chose the texts deliberately. His genius lay in his ability to express in music the message of these texts. I would recommend this CD for two reasons. Essentially of course for the music and singing. Secondly from a practical point of view this seems to be the most difficult CD in the series to find. It took me the best part of two years to acquire it. Its availability is for some reason limited although the wait was definitely worth it.
