Fantastic game for two players
on 6 September 2010
What a smashing game! Two players pit their wits against one another in a 'cat and mouse' board game themed around the Jack The Ripper legend. There's nothing bloodthirsty about it, though. Quite simply, your role is either to escape as Jack through the police dragnet, or apprehend the villain if you are the detective (you play once in each role to complete a game).
What is really clever about the game is the number of permutations available to each player when devising their escape or deducing the guilty party. It makes the game pretty complex, but my 11 year-old son is well up to the challenge, and has scored a few victories against his Dad. There's an element of luck, too, but the main thrust of the game is to strategise, and try to anticipate your opponent's strategies and bluffs.
You need to be pretty disciplined at the end of each round in order to remove certain items from the board - in all the excitement its easy to forget! - but once you've got the basic rules and understand the gist of the game, its really great fun.
I don't know whether the game can be properly described as 'educational', but in terms of analysing, calculating and strategising your options, it offers a pretty good brain workout for young and old.
