Marx Brothers' Mixed Bag with MGM
on 27 June 2017
Having been a big fan of the Marx Bros ever since I was 11 years old (particularly Monkey Business and Duck Soup), I recently had the money to buy this pretty rare box set of the later Marx Bros movies. Even a comparison between those movies and Marx Bros' earlier stints at Paramount show significant differences. The most obvious one for me is that Groucho is not really insulting leading side characters who pin the main plot, like Allan Jones' characters, the circus manager and the cowboy hero and damsel. The second is that, while the Marx Bros do crazy stuff, they aren't as morally anarchic as they were like with their insane war ending of Duck Soup. They could be playing safe with studio executives or something.
--- Personally I do recommend this set for Marx Bros fans, there are some very funny one liners and gags, but it's not for every movie lover. Here are my basic thoughts:
--- Night at the Opera: Excellent. Lots of funny pieces of dialogue.
--- Day at the Races: Excellent.
--- At the Circus: Decent.
--- Go West: Decent.
--- The Big Store: Bit lame. Good moments but too many musical numbers.
--- A Night at Casablanca: Decent, has some good visual gags especially from Harpo but some generic gags and moments.
