This Brazilian prison drama has its charms if you can stick with it. The film is serious in subject yet lighter than expected, with a dry black humour lying through it. It tells the tale of several prisoners, how they ended up there, and focuses in on a doctor who treats and talks to them.

The film is based on a true story, the 7000 prisoner strong largest prison in Brazil. The over populated prison is like a crime world in itself, run by the criminals. This film tells the story four main characters. The prison is later stormed by 300 policemen who kill 111 inmates, in 1992.

This 2002 film captures the 90's extremely well, is character rich, individual and interesting enough. It won a 2003 award at Cannes and should be regarded as one of the better World Cinema titles for a European Audience. There are a handful of good Brazilian Movies, and I would add this one too.

The DVD features are a director commentary, deleted scenes, making of and some historical footage.

This is a fact-based prison riot drama from Brazil. It is an epic, directed by the Brazilian director Hector Babanco of "Kiss of the Spider Woman"-fame. This realistic depiction of prison life with multi-characters canvas is one of the best prison drama ever. If you don't mind toughness and brutality with exposing human conditions, prisoners and prison authority/guards alike, this is a must-watch film. One of the greatest.

An interesting film account of the famous uprising at the jail. Some violent scenes but a good storyline that keeps your attention for the duration of the movie.

A marvellous version of a true story that enfolds from a doctor entering this terrible prison for the first time to a terrible disaster that happened.

You can always tell a good foreign film when you don't notice the subtitles and this is definitely such a film.

The character development is fabulous as are the stories that are told.
Definitely worth seeing

deeply disturbing tragic true story. starts slowly showing the characters stories and lives in the prison, finally coming to a unbelieveable conclusion, showing the callous and perverse side to humanity in dealing with people in the justice system. not an all time great but well worth the watch
