#1 HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWERon 24 May 2004
There have been many compilations of summer music released on double CD's in the UK through the years and all the obvious summer songs have been released many times over. The compilers of this collection have therefore included a lot of songs that were hits in the summer months but very few actually have a summer theme.
Just to be safe, there are a few bona fide summer songs including San Francisco (Scott McKenzie), Sunny afternoon (Kinks), Let's go to San Francisco (Flowerpot men), Do it again (Beach boys), Summer in the city (Lovin' spoonful), Surf city (Jan and Dean) and Kites (Simon Dupree and the big sound). Some of the others have a definite summer feel to them but there are several that would not be out of place on a compilation of songs to warm the winter night. That said, I'm glad that, this time, the compilation doesn't just focus on the obvious songs because it makes for a much more interesting compilation.
There is plenty of rock (as distinct from pop) here including See Emily play (Pink Floyd), Brown eyed girl (Van Morrison), I don't wamt our loving to die (The Herd), Mony mony (Tommy James and the Shondells), Over under sideways down (Yardbirds), Tobacco road (Nashville teens), Space oddity (David Bowie), Give peace a chance (Plastic Ono Band), On the road again (Canned heat), Man of the world (Fleetwood mac), I'd rather go blind (Chicken shack), Living in the past (Jethro Tull), Eight miles high (Byrds) and We've gotta get out of this place (Animals).
There are also some great R+B tracks including Dock of the bay (Otis Redding), Respect (Aretha Franklin), Harlem shuffle (Bob and Earl), PP Arnold (First cut is the deepest) and Booker T and the MG's (Time is tight).
Mainstream pop is well represented too, but this is different from the usual summer compilation. So do not regard this as simply a summer album - this one is for all the year round. Check the track listing to see how many songs you've got already. If it's not too many, this might be just what you're looking for.

How many times can one re mix and hash various 60's artists from different fields of music on to some usable aggregate of sound? Evidently this is endless. With most of the combinations like this you hope you have a programmable CD player or make your own CD in the order and selection that you prefer.
However this particular collection is very useful for those that lived through the era. What were you doing when this song was first out? It is more economical to indulge one's memories with this collection than it is to try to get each album which in turn will still have tracks that are less than top notch.
Now if they had only had spread even more and had "Disraeli Gears" or the other direction and had "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". Oh well you can not have everything.
