This is a compilation of material from the early part of John Martyn's career on the Island record label (late 60s-early 80s). As such, it's hard to see the point of this album. There have already been two good compilations from this era (the double CD 'Sweet Little Mysteries - The Island Anthology' and the single CD 'An Introduction To John Martyn').
The choice of songs, and the songs themselves, are excellent, and would merit 5 stars. The one distinctive feature of this compilation is that includes a few tracks from the very early 'folky' albums, which other compilations tend to ignore. However, this is a pointless compilation and isn't worth buying. There are better alternatives.
If you are new to John Martyn, the compilation album 'Sweet Little Mysteries' covers the Island period better and the compilation album 'Patterns In The Rain' covers his later career. If you are already a John Martyn fan, there is no new material here and no tracks that you won't already have on the original studio albums. If you want to hear what John Martyn is doing now, buy his excellent new album 'On The Cobbles'.

2009 represents a double tragedy for John Martyn fans: firstly, that he died earlier in the year and secondly that he passed away with insufficient people around the world recognising his sheer genius.

For those inquisitive enough to seek out the genius, Late Night John is a great way to do it - and you'll almost certainly go on to invest in many John Martyn albums.(Personal favourites are One World, Inside Out and Solid Air).

Late Night John features classic John Martyn songs from his various albums, with the emphasis on beautiful, haunting, atmospheric love songs - all laid down in John's superb and unique, bluesy style.

Dont listen to this in the car! Play it on a good stereo preferably several times and listen to the intricacies of the playing and production. Combined with John's distinctive voice a wonderful Cd to sit down and listen to preferrably accompanied by a glass of good wine.
If you have any inkling you might like John's work dont hesitate buy this, you will not be dissapointed.

Look lets be honest everybody has there own favourite John Martyn tracks but the truth is anything done between 1967 and 1980 is worth listening to. I have this CD in the car great to listen too, know all the songs inside out and love them all. Stop grumbling about layout and format its the music not the order its put on the album in please.

I've been a fan of John Martyn for years and have both owned and lost most of the Island albums on some format or other. I have to say, suspicions were raised at the low price and the dodgy cover, but this really is a great package. It spans the entire 68-80 era, cherry picking from each album and the selection is pretty much what I would have compiled myself. I've been recommending this compilation to friends and it hasn't disappointed.

Perfectly timed for an investigation into the man after his passing, at a credit crunch defying price!
