I have been tempted by Ken Burns' Baseball series for some time, never having seen it but being a fan of baseball. The two things that put me off were the cost, especially if you have to import it and pay Customs charges, and the fact I was not really interested in pre-war baseball. This set solves both these problems, covering just the second half of the last century and being reasonably priced.
It's a great DVD covering a whole variety of aspects of the America's national game and presented in an interesting format. It reminded me a bit of the civil rights series, Eyes on the Prize, in the way the different segments are presented.
The first of the two discs covers the fifties and the sixties in great detail. The players, the ball parks and the famous and memorable moments. Many of the talking heads are excellent; Billy Crystal stands out, as do Vin Scully, Bob Costas and George Will, as well as some of the the actual players, who were still around when the series was originally broadcast. Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Curt Flood, etc.
The first disc runs to 4 hours. I have yet to watch the second disc. I am going to save it for a rainy day!
If you are interested in baseball, and don't want to buy the complete 9 innings set, I highly recommend this alternative. It's Region Free, so you won't need a multi region DVD player.
