TOP 100 REVIEWERon 6 March 2013
Ornette Coleman's trumpeter Don Cherry(1936-1995) recorded this excellent album with the great saxophonist John Coltrane(1926-1967) in New York City on June 28, 1960 & July 8, 1960 but ATLANTIC kept it in the vaults until 1966.
Two tracks feature Don Cherry(trumpet), John Coltrane(tenor & soprano sax); Charlie Haden(bass) & Ed Blackwell(drums). Bassist Percy Heath replaces Haden on the remaining three tracks.
Cherry & Coltrane complement one another well and highlights include the trumpeter's 'Cherryco', Ornette's 'The Blessing' which features Coltrane's first recorded soprano solo and Thelonious Monk's 'Bemsha Swing'.
John Coltrane was impressed with Ornette Coleman's legendary 1959 'Five Spot' gigs(sadly unrecorded) so it's fascinating to hear him with members of Ornette's classic quartet.
'The Avant-Garde', despite the title, is an accessible and enjoyable album that deserves to be better known.
