Originally released in his native Australia in 2004 on the Virt label, Shane Nicholson's first solo record is a thing of true beauty. Melodic, smart, beautifully arranged and sung (Nicholson is a shoe-in for a younger Neil Finn)and utterly flab and filler free. Crowded House are obvious influences but, to be fair, this is actually a far stronger record than Finn and friends recent reunion release. Delights are many - opener 'Best Day Of The Year' is a gorgeous mid tempo melodic treat, the rocking 'It's A Movie' and the nagging 'Nice To Be Here' both should have been big hits whilst the jaunty 'Perfect' is the best song Tim Finn never wrote. 'Life On Mars' and 'Day In The Sun' are seductive slow burners that recall both Teddy Thompson, the Beatles and ELO. Erudite lyrics, precision harmonies and a truly wonderful voice. Repeated listening rewards in spades. Hugely impressive.
Sounds like - Crowded House, Finn Brothers, Beatles, Teddy Thompson, Thorns.
