There doesn't seem to be a difference between C42 Plus and C42UX, except the UX version has a black cover.
I've always trusted epson as a printer company because I know they'll always release drivers for it. They have done, they work and they've even brought them out for 64bit Windows, where other companies have failed. The support for this printer is very good, and they still continue to offer drivers for it even now it's out of date... by a little way.
Typically, the inks are very expensive, but I recommend JetTek or Inkright, which are much cheaper and just as good. You will get a little message about 'not using Epson ink', but ignore that. The little chip on the ink read by the printer picks up what the cartridge is.
This printer prints very fast for an ink jet and is brilliant at printing out pages and pages of text. When it comes to colour prints, the better quality the paper, the better the quality. The settings in the printer menu are good, because you can set 'photo enhance' with high quality to get brilliant prints on pictures. It prints really well in glossy photo paper, even for an old printer. I rarely need to change the ink and I never get any problems with it (except it took back a printed sheet and destroyed it once, but that was using Windows default drivers...)
The printer fascilities enable you to do typical things with your printer. Clean the print heads, print a test page, realign the print heads, etc. A good all round printer, doesn't cost the earth and is superb for quick printing of text if you cannot afford a laser jet. Maybe slight traces of banding on some colour prints, but altering the quality of print and enhancing it will reduce that nicely. I'm very happy with this printer and even more so at the support Epson give for it.
I have found this printer to be a first rate piece of equipment. Firstly and most importantly it is reliable, no messy paper jams and wasted ink. The ink cartridges are easy to change and last a reasonably long time. It is not the highest resolution printer on the market by any means but it produces very acceptable colour copies and with good quality photographic paper in the tray it will also give you very acceptable representations of your photographs. All in all a very good product for the money.
As with other Epson printers that I have had, the C42 gives a message that some internal part has reached the end of it's working life and just refuses to print until you have seen an engineer! It's obviously based on the number of copies you print, as are the ink out messages
