Joe Pernice has been producing brilliant records, under various guises, for over a decade now, to considerable critical acclaim but precious little commercial success. And the frustrating thing is, it's hard to see what there is to dislike about his music. The melodies are divine, the lyrics are sharp and wistful, and Joe himself has a voice wrapped in velvet.
'Yours, Mine and Ours' marks something of a departure from his previous efforts in that the country stylings of yore have been excised. Instead, in its place we have a more straightforward 'pop' sound, owing much to The Smiths and The Cure of 'In-Between Days' and 'Boys Don't Cry'.
There isn't a weak song on the album, and you'll find yourself humming most of them after just one listen.
So please - go and boost Joe's pitiful bank balance and buy this wonderful example of pop music!

Listening to this album immediately invokes images of Morrissey/Marr in full flow, or "In-Between Days" by The Cure or even the massively underrated Gene, and it's non the worse for that. The words "country" of "alt-country" fill any old punk like myself with dread, and the much publicised Morrissey overtones are there, but this album has a sound all it's own. I defy anyone to try to Line Dance to it!!

This is simply a beautiful album of generally melancholic, but superbly crafted, elegaic music. There is humour in there to - check out the lyrics to the last track as an example. Joe Pernice has one of the finest voices in contemporary music, take a listen and then decide

Ignore the alt.country and Americana tags, just pure, shimmering guitar driven songs that are perfect for summer evenings, try it, you just might like it.
