The need for speed series has been progressively getting better and better. After last years hit NFS: hot pursuit 2 a completely different type of racing has been focused on.
Before it was flash high performance sports cars from the likes of ferrari and lamborghini. Now your task is to obtain an everyday car, for example a volkswagen golf and to win races on underground mode in order to obtain money so that visual or performance related upgrades can be purchased.
Eventually you unlock faster cars such as the toyota supra or mazda rx-7 by competeing in drift, circuit or sprint modes. The best however is drag racing due to the incredibly high sense of speed and choas as you change gears manually whilst avoiding hazards such as traffic or barriers.
I rate underground very highly due to the glitzy, highly polished graphics however the soundtrack isn't to everyone's tastes as it is mostly hip hop, also the main mode could have been longer. Overall i think its a great game and is well worthy of been bought.

Given a chance, Need for Speed Underground will surprise many PS2 gamers who consider themselves firmly placed in the Gran Turismo camp. It's true to say that for realism and sheer wide-eyed graphical impressiveness, GT3 doesn't really have an equal amongst current PS2 racing titles, and many will not look beyond that. But I urge anyone holding such a mindset to drop his/her guard and spend thirty minutes behind the wheel of Electronic Arts' latest racing title.
Racing lines, braking points, suspension settings and gear ratios no longer dominate your thinking. In NFSU, these are replaced by things more related to grunt and aesthetics, such as engine upgrades, nitrous injection kits, body styling and paint. But don't let this fool you into thinking that NFSU is purely an arcade racer - there is enough here to interest everyone. And it's not purely about winning races either. Style points are awarded over five different types of event - circuit racing, sprints, time trials, drag races and drift competitions - for taking short cuts, near misses with oncoming traffic, outrageous drifts around curves and perfectly executed gear-changes during drag races, to name just a few. As you accumulate the style points and win events, you unlock a huge array of spoilers, body kits, rims, paint colours, decals, vinyls and engine/handling mods which you can use to turn your off-the-shelf motor into a seriously impressive looking street racer. Without doubt, this is where a major chunk of the playability of this game can be found. One can easily lose half an hour redesigning your car with the latest offerings, and there's a definite sense of satisfaction when you roll up to the line at the start of the next event with your new creation.
Graphically the game doesn't disappoint either. EA have managed to capture the right atmosphere with all the races taking place at night adding to the whole illegal underground feel, through blazing neon city streets, quiet suburbs and industrial areas. The feeling of speed is phenomenal, possibly the best I've experienced in a console game, which has been enhanced with very clever use of sound - you can almost feel the rush of air as you experience a near miss with oncoming traffic.
My only complaint would be the lack of any replay ability during the races, but this is compensated for in some ways by the slick camera angle change when executing jumps and other stunts. Seeing your car soaring over a jump at high speed from third-person perspective is a nice touch, and only adds to the whole experience.
To sum up, whether you are a hardened simulation fan, or perhaps have never even considered playing a racing title, give NFSU a chance to show you what its got under the hood. You won't regret it. There's only one drawback - if your spouse or partner gets addicted to it like my wife has, then you'll possibly find yourselves fighting over the console!

"Need for Speed : Underground" is an excellent game. The graphics are 10/10 and the music is something never seen before. The only bad point is the abscence of police unlike "Hot Pursuit 2". Overall and brilliant game and an essential present for any driving game enthusiast.

Completely different from Gran Turismo, and also previous Need For Speed games. It boasts a massive city where you have to become #1 in all types of race rankings. You start off with a standard car and then have to add bodykits, alloys, suspension, and most of all Nitrous Oxide. If you are into your fast cars, then get this. You can do absolutley anything to your car. Just buy it.

Need for speed is as good as it gets, with thousands of features and beautifully crafted cars, better then it's predecesser need for speed hot pursuit 3 (i think!) It's a beautiful game and deserves five stars, if i were you then i would buy this title. (also it being on the ps2 gives it the boost of graphical power.)
