TOP 500 REVIEWERon 24 June 2011
The Haunted Palace is if course nothing to do with Poe but takes its inspiration from HP Lovecraft's weird and wonderful writings. Beautifully shot in scope and blessed with an atmospheric set and some truly macabre details, the film is a genre classic which will delight fans even if it is not to the taste of modern audiences. The Tower of London is a nice bonus but not quite in the same league although it's hammy pyrotechnics are quite fun. Still at these prices this DVD is a terrific bargain!

One of the lesser known poe adaptations by Roger Corman but nonetheless atmospheric and enjoyable.

Film is great but Amazon have it in the wrong ratio for my Kindle fire 2017 .Everything tall and skinny. There seem to be no options to change ratio

For Vincent Price afficionados this is a must! Brilliant 'ham' acting and (very) dry humour. Not much here for Lovecraft fans but still an excellent viewing choice.

I first saw "The Haunted Palace" many years ago on late night TV when I was really much too young to still be up at that late hour! I thought it was one of the eeriest horror films I had ever seen and, watching it many years later, it seems to have lost none of its power. Vincent Price is in fine form in the dual role of Charles Dexter Ward and Joseph Curwen, the undead ancestor who possesses him. The film's title; "Edgar Allen Poe's 'The Haunted Palace'" is rather misleading as the story owes much more to H P Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos he created, and indeed the Many Tentacled One puts in an all-too-brief appearance towards the latter part of the film. The creepy 19th Century New England town in which the action takes place is nicely realised, as are the deformed inhabitants whose ancestors burned warlock Joseph Curwen alive; not however before he placed a horrible curse on both them and their descendents forever. However, it's really the flawless performance of Vincent Price as both hapless husband and evil necromancer that holds sway here. In short, a classic.
