Best known for launching the careers of '70s synth wizard Vangelis and MOR icon Demis Roussos, Aphrodite's Child were an intruiging blend of traditional Greek music, pop and psychedelia allied to some progressive touches and counter-cultural references. This Double CD tells you all you need to know: All singles (A-sides & B-sides), both 1st and 2nd albums included in full, as well as selected highlights from their 1972 progressive rock meisterwork '666'. This compilation covers all angles, from the Procol Harum-esque, keyboard-driven '60s European hits such as 'Rain And Tears', 'It's Five O'Clock' and 'End Of The World' to their later progressive rock meanderings and all points inbetween. This compilation also contains 3 unreleased tracks, the 1969 studio outtake 'Pathenon' as well as 2 live tracks. Put simply, if you buy this and '666' you have everything this cult band issued in their career. There is discographical information, picture sleeve photos and even European chart stats to boot. Definitive and indispensible, recommended to fans of obscure European psychedelia. Try it.
SINGLES PLUS plus is all you need to know about APHRODITES CHILD ft Demis Roussos and Vangelis--they really had an angle to the times in the late 60s--I WANT TO LIVE says it all about their counterculture attitude especially in view of the then military regime in Greece which did not like hippies. All the singles are here plus the first 2 albums which have a unique take on the times--RAIN AND TEARS their first hit is sublime as continental chocolates--in fact the early tracks have a similar vibe to Traffic? or the English Nirvana of the late 60s. Included is the best of the later prog-orientated 666--which is hard-going as a full album and a little more self-conscious than the earlier stuff. If you like RAIN AND TEARS, there are quite a few here in the same vein--and effectiveness--to sum up--TAKE YOU TO THE END OF THE WORLD.
