Another cracking show from HBO. Set in Baltimore it depicts the life struggles of people who are caught in the clutches of drugs. If you liked the wire you are sure to see a few familiar faces in unfamiliar roles.

Having been a huge fan of all 5 series of The Wire I was really hoping The Corner would live up to my high expectations and I wasn't disappointed.
Whilst The Wire is obviously a more experienced, polished view of the affects of drugs on the streets of Baltimore, The Corner gives in many ways more personal stories, showing how drugs affect the users on the street corners on a smaller, more intimate scale.
Some of the characters clearly go on to be the basis of characters in The Wire (in a couple of cases anecdotes and whole scene ideas are used in Bubbles' story in seasons 4 & 5,) and it is interesting to see how the writers have refined their style in the later work. Several actors from The Wire also appear in hugely different roles in The Corner, highlighting the versatility and acting talent that would later go on to help gain The Wire the critical acclaim it has since garnered.
Don't expect The Corner to be the sharp, slickly produced equal to The Wire in terms of production values and don't expect the exciting, cop based action. Instead The Corner gives a more down to Earth and in some ways depressingly inevitable view of a small part of the world that inspired The Wire; but its fantastic acting and dialogue make it compulsive viewing from start to end.

Despite many other directors attempts to document the realities of illicit drug taking - as opposed to the 'socially acceptable' legal drug taking in the form of tobacco or alcohol consumption - Alexander accurately captures the grim and often brutal realities for society caused not by the effects of drugs per se, but by the morally bankrupt 'War on Drugs' and prohibition.

The Corner is a powerful mini series. it's definitely not in the same league in production levels as The Wire, however it's simply the story that packs the punch.

An horrific year in the life of one Baltimore family, all based on their true story.
It leaves you feeling like you've been punched in the stomach its that powerful.

This should be shown as part of the education children receive at school about drugs. There's no glamour in addiction and more often than not, no happy endings.

This was originally early in the 200os based on Simon's journalistic work in Baltimore and focusing on six depressing junkies. Good performances but the pseudo doco style is less convincing than the later fictional approach in the Wire. You can recognise characters that appear later in different guises in The Wire but this is an interesting demonstration of why fiction is more powerful than true live.

I found that this was a good pre squeal to the Wire, a lot of the characters were similar to the Wires but also it was a true story. It made each character a human being in their own right and disclose the reality of their situation, instead of dope fiend takes drugs and dies, it went through the process, and how the socio-economic condition perpetuates the choices of all in this situation.

Myself and my wife bought this on the back of loving the Wire. We thought that it was excellent and moving and sad and pretty gritty. It doesn't have the polish or high end production values of the Wire but this doesn't matter. This mini series is a based on true life representation of social deprivation and addiction in Baltimore and tells the story from the addicts' point of view - harsh difficult and tragic lives.

Thoroughly recommend it but not for the faint hearted.

Very pleased with this dvd. Came well packaged. Looking forward to watching this as i saw the series on tv a few years ago and got totally hooked. Excuse the pun, as its about junkies and street dealers. Would recommend this to anyone who likes a true story, but acted well.

Having seen The Wire I just had to see this too, and thankfully it's just as gritty and realistic. The acting is top notch, and it really gives you a good idea of how hard it is to cope with addictions.

Also seeing some of the people this is based on at the end is a really nice touch by the shows creators.
