Another great album from Mike + the Mechanics, as the bands third album, after the release of Living Years in 1988, this 1991 classic serves out some great songs including the great signal 'Word of Mouth' sung by the late great Paul Young and 'Get Up',sung by the soulful voice of Paul Carrack and another successful hit that put the Mechanics on the map. In my opinion, Word of Mouth is a fun going rock/pop album that any Mechanics fan will enjoy, however it lacks that certain up beat sound that came from the Living Years album previously. Again Word of Mouth and Get up and some other various songs on the album are fun to listen to but some songs leave it feeling a bit slow in comparison to some of the other albums from M+TM. On the other hand, Word of Mouth also has some well written and catchy songs that will leave you singing in your head (or out loud) for the rest of the day... no matter how fast or slow some of them are. Over all a great album, a bit slow and feels short at times but packs in some great tunes that will leave any Mechanics fan happy by the end of it.

There are some cracking tracks on this, and a couple I could do without, but I'd have bought it just for the Paul Young tracks. As wonderful a vocalist as Paul Carrack continues to be, other than Get Up, I'm not sure he was given the best vehicles for his talent on this album. Word of Mouth is a classic 80s power ballad, Let's Just Pretend has some lovely soaring notes in it and Stop Baby is a complete delight. It's a shame that the band as it was broke up as a result of them not touring with this one and it's telling that none of the tracks on it made it into their later live sets. It's yet another example of what a great vocal talent was lost when Paul Young passed away in 2000. Just my opinion, YMMV.
