Of all the programmes I can remember from my childhood this one has to come top of the list.

I can remember being woken by the iconic siren heralding the start of the reruns. This was one of those late-night, post 11 o'clock, imported TV programmes; and I can remember sneaking downstairs at the first shriek of the siren that introduced the theme music at the start of the show.

The show followed the five men of the elite Special Weapons and Tactics unit (known as SWAT). The team was led by Lieutenant Dan "Hondo" Harrelson (Steve Forrest); and he was ably assisted by officer Jim Street (the late Robert Urich), Sgt Deacon "Deke" Kay (Rod Perry), Officer Dominic Luca (Mark Shera) and Officer TJ McCabe (James Coleman).

This box set contains the 13 episodes that made up the first season. There is no word on whether not the second season will be released.

SWAT was a series that was ahead of its time, and was originally cancelled because of its excessive violence - there was an objection to the use of guns and snipers in a police drama about a team that goes into "situations too dangerous for even the police to handle".

The series is only available on US region 1, however, this is not an embedded DVD box set so will play on a region two player - it is the equivalent of the region 0 or region free.

If like me you have vague recollections of this from your childhood then I can recommend this box set to you, though it is not as violent as many of the programmes that we see now it is still an outstanding series.

As a teenager at the time, I too have fond memories of this 1970's crime series. Produced by Aaron Spelling (TV series 'Charlies Angels', 'Starsky and Hutch' etc) the series introduces us to the crack, handpicked five-man team of the LAPD - The Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (S.W.A.T.) The team is led by LT. Dan 'Hondo' Harelson, (Steve Forrest - 'The Baron') and also includes Robert Urich ('Vegas' TV series) as Officer Jim Street.

The first episode sees Street's patrol partner murdered while on duty, with Hondo's elite team of marksmen soon out to track down the gang responsible. Subsequent storylines see the team facing the likes of terrorism, kidnapping, a jealous sniper, and a time bomb. The performances are good, with the characters sharing a good camaraderie between them - "buddies" of course, but never in a oversentimental way. With some of the strong violence (for the time) apparently contibuting to the cancellation of the series, the stories have a tougher, more grittier feel than some Spelling productions. A pity the series had to end so early as I was really into the characters and stories on first transmission.

The remastered picture quality is OK, as is the sound, there are no subtitles. As another reviewer has correctly observed, this region 1 collection will play on a region 2 DVD player. This 3-disc first series features a total of thirteen, 50-minute episodes to get your teeth into...... Now where is the rest of the series?

I love this type of 70's show so we're half way there
Only watched first episode so far but already hooked and look forward to watching them all over the next few weeks
I barely remember this show as a child so it's all new to me and can recommend it without reservation

S.w.a.t. A great DVD this is. American tv at it's best.took a long time to finally get hold of this, in the end I had to buy a multi region DVD player but well worth it.. It's a must see as a cop programme.
