I play this CD quite often, which is clearly a good sign, or, at least, I think so! This Warner Apex super-budget disc is a straight reissue of the original Erato recording from the mid-1990s 4 Ballades / Rhapsodies / Handel Variations; the only slight disappointment is the somewhat shallow sound, but it is more than acceptable.

Lubimov is really quite athletic in the "Handel" Variations, more of a sprinter than a marathon runner, and that's fine with me. Where Lubimov really scores, though, is in the Op.10 Ballades and Op.79 Rhapsodies, where the youthful and Romantic restlessness of the Op.10 works are played really beautifully. Same for Op.79.

Lubimov also recorded a quite brilliant set of Mozart Sonatas, etc, for Erato in the 1990s Mozart : Complete Mozart Piano Sonatas and, more recently, some great Beethoven Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Op 109, 110 and 111 and Schubert Schubert: Impromptus [performed on Joseph Schantz 1830] for Zig-Zag Territories - all well-worth getting to know.

I really like this CD and it is an excellent budget purchase.
