Better than average american rock
on 3 June 2003
I bought this album on the strength of one song. 'Here without you' is one of the best rock ballads ever written. Touching lyrics, a cracking chorus and dripping with strings! The rest of the album is a bit hit and miss. 'When Im gone' is the only single released from the album so far and is quite frankly fairly mediocre. It chugs along at a mundane pace and makes you wonder why this song is so huge in the U.S,(probably to do with the pro war video but enough about politics). What saves this album from nickleback esque heavy rock hell is Brad Arnolds voice. His singing performance shows real emotion and lifts alot of the tracks on the album. Thats not to say their are no good tunes. 'Away from the sun' and 'the road im on' are both enjoyable and there are other songs that catch the attention. Unfortunately there are a few too many songs that seem completely devoid of insperation and were created by a kind of soft rock processing machine. All in all a decent follow up to their huge first album but this wont be turning to many heads in the uk market.
