right. the smashing pumpkins were an amazing, and epic band. their brilliance stemmed from each of their song having a particular hook or section to it that was just aurally wonderful. examples of this are Soma, Luna and Hummer on Siamese Dream and Porcelina of the Vast Oceans and many others on Melon Collie.
do not get me wrong, this album is nice. but that's all it is. its a good 1st listen, but there's no depth to it. sometimes there are so many layers of guitar, that the song is almost overwhelmed by sound. not a good thing. what Billy has tried to do, is to combine all of these wonderful bits into 1 album and into every song on the album. the songs are simply too 'in your face' and do not have the subtle grace and beauty of a great many Pumpkin songs.
if your looking for musical depth and intrigue, go for Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins.
I felt pretty disappointed after listening to this album.

I've always been a great fan of the Smashing Pumpkins but that doesnt mean that when I listened to this album I instantly tried to compare it to them. Zwan as an individual entity sound pretty lame and the whole album is woefully underproduced. It is possibly the most repressed rock album I have heard in recent times and has not a shadow of the appeal of Corgans previous work.
Particularly dissapointing was the guitar work on the album. Billy Corgan has been responsible for shifting the goalposts in what guitarists aim for in songwriting and performance. So how I ask did he become so boring! The guitar parts are subdued and even corny in places (see Honestly). The album at no point "ROCKS", it more kind of oozes.
I guess it adds up that a band is only as good as it's lifestyle. If u want to be wholesome and a "good little rock kid" then Zwan may just be okay for you. The album's appeal is centered around wishy-washy emotion and cheesy placations. It really sounds like rock has become a bit too much for Billy and someone should fetch him his slippers and a cup of Cocoa!

Gone are the subtle & lilting melodies
Gone are the heartfelt & inventive lyrics
Gone are the carefully crafted songs that build from silent whispers to crashing climaxes
What we have here is 40 mins of dull strumming with Billy & Paz (who?) singing, nay humming along !
Witness the burn out of Billy Corgan. Simply put there doesn't seem to be a decent tune left in the guy.
Either that or he has been opressed by the other relative unknowns in the band.
I bought the album then saw the band at Shepherds Bush Empire. Frankly the guy looked bored of it all - bit like someone on a date with someone they didn't want to be with.
Jimmy was the only good thing about it.
Zwan was said to be a project. It should've been shelved before it got this far!

I've not listened to the whole album yet, but what i've heard so far will appeal to all pumpkins fans. Its the follow up to Mellon Collie that they shoulve made!

If you were hoping to hear an LP that sounded like Billy Corgan's now defunct Smashing Pumpkins, then your going to be dissapointed. The structure of most songs is very repetative and very repetative. Did I say it was repetative? The songs are quite simple and some very catchy "Yeah and Come with me". Some tracks just fail to shine "Lyric, Declarations Of Faith". I guess that most of Corgan's fan base from the Pumpkins' will be the ones checking this out. Its very hit and miss, but worth catching if you idolise the bald headed ego maniac that is Mr Billy Corgan.
