Dvd of one of Hollywood's greatest ever films - plus brilliant extra features
on 12 October 2014
From start to finish this is truly one of the best films to come out of the Paramount Studio's, or any other studio come to think of it. Gloria Swanson, in the greatest performance of her career, gives a brilliant portrayal of how narcissistic and out of touch divas can become living on past successes. Her over the top Norma Desmond character is a delight to watch - at least from this side of the camera - and one can only hope that modern divas can see themselves in Swanson's performance. Featuring a stellar cast from William Holden as the down-on-his-luck writer, Erich Von Stroheim as the discoverer, ex-husband and butler and Nancy Olsen as the young attractive writer who helps Holden finish Desmond's script. Cameo appearances from the great Buster Keaton, Cecil B. DeMille and Anna Q. Nilsson make Sunset Boulevard a must watch film for anyone who loves great movies. Directed by the legendary Billy Wilder, Sunset Boulevard is an iconic cinematic experience that straddles send-up with more than a touch of Hollywood reality.
The dvd has superb crystal clear sharp blemish free viewing quality and the mono audio sounds great. Extras include; the Making Of Sunset Boulevard which is a very informative 26 minute documentary, a 14 minute featurette on costume designer Edith Head, and a 15 minute featurette regarding the music of Sunset Boulevard. Original Morgue Prologue Script pages where you also get to view silent scenes that were cut from the film are an excellent inclusion, as is the Hollywood Location Map. Together with the film, all of these really good extras and the 3 minute 13 seconds trailer makes this dvd a fantastic package to own. I can't recommend it highly enough.
