Let's address the elephant in the room
on 1 September 2015
I love Marvin Gaye's music, but it has to be said the ere are few great songs on this album, they are also buried in a production and instrumentation that sounded dated in even 1971, the mixing is atrocious in parts with the backing track very low and the vocal high, for the three classic songs present the others are just a mush of samey average songs that get more boring as the album continues after the opening salvo.
I know it addressed social and ecological issues blah, blah, blah but that doesn't make it a classic album, to me it is just a sprawling mass of largely average songs that sound dated and of their time, sorry I know it wont be a popular view, but it really is a kings new clothes of an album that the critics talked up, it doesn't come close to matching the reputation it has been given, the theme has been covered by many others a lot better, Stevie wonders work in the 70's being an example.
