Meanwhile Rome burns....
on 5 September 2006
2003 is not a year remembered for an album release by OCS. However they did indeed faithfully put another one out, so to speak.
It is undoubtedly an improvement on the lacklustre "Mechanical Wonder" that preceded it. The opener and lead-single - "I Just Need Myself" is a sharp and well-put together tune with Steve Cradock's choppy guitar working well with the excellent rhytmn section of the band. The title track is arguably one of the best things the band have done but it's unfortunate that no-one notices a track like "North Atlantic Drift". "Make The Deal" is another solid track harking back to late 1960s British pop music.
Elsewhere things are not quite as sharp. Throwaway tracks like "Second Hand Car" and "Oh Collector" could be B-sides.
"She's Been Writing" sounds like it's been done before.
If OCS tightened up a bit on their quality control they might make another truly very good album. This, unfortunately is just very good in a couple of places and largely forgettable in the rest.
