This is 'quite' a jazzy album for Eddie Harris (he tends to produce funky Donald Bird type ones, or jazzy ones) but there's one track, 'Illusionary Dreams' that really captures why I used to go and see Eddie as often as I could when he played over here, and that is his relaxed humour and his skill. He describes the track as one that will be on his next album, and then tries to demonstrate how all the different parts in the song will go. It's not funny when I tell it though :/
The audience in this album are joining in, cheering him on and generally having a good time, which adds to the atmosphere (they add a vibe similar to the crowd in the background of 'Wade in the Water', by - oh blimey, what's his name? - that guy that had a big hit with it in the late 60's... sorry, can't remember his name, but it'll no doubt come back to me as soon as I've finished this :)
Ramsey Lewis! just in time...
Finally, a short bit of info to end this ramble - Eddie Harris studied electronics in the Air Force, and used his new-found knowhow to build his own distortion amplifiers - feeding the sound of his saxophone through them and making sounds similar to some wah wah pedals nowadays - a lot of electric guitarists find his sound quite intriguing
