The late great Philadelphia-born hefty soul legend Solomon Burke - and what a fine name that is! - reputedly fathered twenty-one children, sat on a throne when he unforgettably appeared on Jools Holland, and had a voice as drenched in righteous soul as anyone before or since.
This was one of his last albums, and, for what it`s worth, won him his only(!) Grammy award. It`s a sensationally good set of eleven hand-picked songs by, among others, Van Morrison (Fast Train & Only a Dream, two superbly soulful songs), Bob Dylan (the sly Stepchild), Tom Waits (a lovely version of Diamond in Your Mind), Elvis Costello (The Judgement, as appropriate for Burke as his The Comedians was for Roy Orbison), Brian Wilson (Soul Searchin`) and Nick Lowe (The Other Side of the Coin), along with a stupendous song called Flesh and Blood by the record`s producer Joe Henry.
As if that weren`t enough riches, The Blind Boys of Alabama join Solomon on the outrageously compulsive None of Us Are Free.
Burke sings like an angel and a devil on this wonderful collection, those rootsy deep-soul vocals making the most of the eclectic choice of songs. In fact, I`d say he excels himself in the same way Tom Jones does on his last (and career-best) two albums, which are similarly soaked in blues and soul. (Surely this very record from 2002 inspired TJ when, a few years later, he came to make that amazing brace of albums.)
If you love classic soul with a contemporary sensibility, in excellent gritty sound - played on real instruments too! - then this really is for you.

Stunning.

I was lucky enough to catch Solomon at the Bansko Jazz Festival 2010, and not having heard much of him in recent years, was knocked out by the soulfulness and power of his performance. I can honestly say the hairs on the back of my neck stood up at times.
One highlight of that show was his performance of Diamond on your Mind. I was determined to get a copy of that song, and found it on this album, to say I was impressed with the whole album would be an understatement.
If you are new to soul music, listen to this and become a convert,
If you are a fan who only remembers his early recordings, take a listen and be amazed.
The only regret is his sad death shortly after the concert I saw, which means no more excellent recordings from this giant of a man, and giant of music .
Buy this album you will not be disappointed !

Lovely cd of Solomon Burke - I hadnt heard of him before and found this mix version compared to his older stuff and his Country Western stuff a great intro, with an amazing voice.

He sounds pretty old in most of these songs. I think I would like some of his earlier recordings better. I'll try that next time.
