there's some of the greatest songs the Jayhawks ever did on this album and even the not so good stuff is good but then talking about a great band - the reason it gets three stars is just because they've done more consistent albums but I wouldn't let that put you off!

A note from the band:

The Smile vinyl that came out earlier this year for European distribution was not authorized by the band and we are advising people not to buy it and to wait for the upcoming release on August 5. The new version is superior for several reasons: 1) it's 2 LPs versus 1 LP; much better sound quality 2) the upcoming vinyl release was remastered using the best sources; the Euro release wasn't remastered 3) the new reissue has bonus tracks, new photos & new liner notes by Bob Ezrin; the unauthorized version has none of those things; heck, they didn't even use the correct URL for the band's website! Don't waste your money on this - please wait for the authorized release on August 5.

The "sound of Smile" remains close to the "Sound of Lies" but lacks its poignancy. It's perhaps less of an effort, depicting too clearly that the Jayhawks were trying hard to find their feet after the departure of Mr. Olson. However, the melodies are still great, there are some straightforward rockers (more or less) and on the whole, once you've listened to it a couple of times, it still is a great album by a great band.
As a new fan, you'd better buy "Rainy day" or "sound of lies", which are somewhat more accessible. For the iniated, a good buy.
