Mediocre attempt to recreate gang life.
on 13 October 2016
I did enjoy this film to a certain extent but the proble was that it suddenly seemed very 'dated' which may seem an odd comment being as it is more than 35 years since it was made but this does NOT happen with all films, 'The Godfather' and 'Heat' are prime examples. The acting was ok, some better than others and there were some taboo subjects hit on, like homosexuality which wasn't viewed in the same 'liberal' manner it is nowadays and there were 1 or 2 people I thought were miscast - like Charlie from Casualty TRYING to act hard and the sycophantic crawling to the Mafia member who came to the UK at the behest of Gang Boss Bob Hoskins who hoped to forge links and expand his 'empire'. Helen Mirren was a bit TOO big for her boots. I'm not sure if it was the accent of Eddie Constantine as the Mafia man, his amateurish acting or his obvious toupee which rubbed me up the wrong way but it did. I like Hoskins, and having actually met him and conversed with him for an hour or so I have to say he was a gentleman but even he was a bit over-the-top for me.
