I know we all write reviews on music that we love, but this is gorgeous. Folktunes presented in piano and cello. I was amazed that there were no reviews of this. It has something very pure about it. It is English somehow stripped to the core, folktunes that are lost to us in the urban sprawl. Here is the music of the edges, where the roads run out and we walk in the ancient fields.
I have been looking for a recording of "six studies in English folk song" in its original piano/cello score and this did not disappoint. The cello playing on some of the pieces is truly heart-rending. The additional pieces such as the Phantasy Quintent are a voyage of discovery into Vaughan-Williams somewhat lesser known chamber works. Beautiful, soulful playing from the Nash ensemble and a high quality recording.
