A lot of instrumental guitar albums tend to be self indulgent, with songs that sound too similar, but this one by Purple guitarist Steve Morse is not either of these things. Steve's technical prowess is obviously to the fore but you never feel that he is just trying to show off; electric guitar numbers are balanced with acoustic songs such as 'Back Porch' and Steve's bluegrass influences are an integral part of the sound here. He is clearly trying something different on the evocative 'Clear Memories', whilst the track 'Heightened Awareness' rocks along nicely at the beginning. The songs really do evoke images of mountains/open spaces so therefore this recording has plenty of soul despite the seemingly complex nature of some of the arrangements. Anyone in love with guitar based music should buy this!
As a fan of all things guitar and shred I had naively overlooked Steve Morses playing but in the light of many a favourable review I decided to take a gamble on this c.d. I was rewarded with a work of such stunning beauty and technical prowess that I’ve been kicking myself for ignoring this mans playing for so long. Even though Steve can obviously shred with the best of ‘em it’s the slower more heartfelt numbers where he truly makes magic, I cannot recommend this recording highly enough. If you’re a fan of great guitar music or just need to expand your horizons a little as I did you could do a lot worse than checking this genius out.
Yes. Steve Morse is probably the best rock guitarist out there. But hey, don't just take my word for it. Buy this album and find out for yourself. There is no substitute for experience and talent, and Steve Morse has plenty of both. This album offers more diversity for Morse fans than ever. From full shred to acoustic magic, it's all here. A solid effort, once again.
Never mind the likes of Satriani and Vai , Steve Morse is THE man. Split Decision is an awesome example of his writing and instrumental genius. Unlike some of his peers Morse has the tunes and diverse talent to make every track here a winner. This is not just a guitar album , it is truly inspired music and totally addictive. Buy it !
