HALL OF FAMETOP 1000 REVIEWERon 9 June 2011
An excellent release from The Blues Band. With the usual mix of old standards and self penned material they have delivered another album of blues which really makes you feel good. Again the charm and good natured personalities of the band members shines through in their music. Mixing it up a bit there are big, punchy arrangements alongside slow stripped back numbers, the change of pace is effective and makes for a very interesting album.

The standout track to my ear are `I am the Blues' and `Mr. Estes Said', in which the band show a great knowledge of the blues oeuvre, as well as a great passion for the music. The tracks recount the history of the genre, and pay tribute to artists that inspired the band, in a very apt and hummable way.

An excellent effort all round.

One of the good things about The Blues Band is their ability to make each album sound fresh within their long-established style. This CD does just that, mixing the laid-back with the slightly chunkier numbers with ease. On the first listen through the songs which stand out are those which remind you of earlier recordings, among them 'Wait A Minute', 'These Shoes' and the wonderful 'I Am The Blues'. Second time through you are surprised by those which don't immediately sound like the band, like 'Last Chance to Dance', 'Stepping Out On Main' and 'Resting on Jesus'. After that it begins to fit together into a more consistent whole with tracks like the witty opener, 'Half the Man, Twice the Fool', coming to the fore. In other words, it takes a little getting used to but is none the poorer for it. This is, as ever, a very polished offering - it should be after 21+ years together! - which for me lacks the sheer excitement of some of the band's earlier rhythm and blues CDs but demonstrates a new depth of material. It extends their repertoire and should extend their audience. The last thing to say is that the recording quality, always good with Blues Band CDs, is the best yet.
