I never believed the Handsome Family could improve on 'In the Air' but they have here. 'Twilight' is amazing and displays much more of a variety than previous albums although still full of all those reasons that make the Handsome Family such a treasure. The whole feel of the album is quite wintery and you can just feel the cold and damp atmosphere seeping through the speakers on tracks like 'Snow White Diner', 'I know you are near' and 'Dark Eye'. The classic track must however go to the penultimate 'So Long' during which the Handsome Family's tongue in cheek humour shines through. I guess they will never trouble the charts but buy this album and welcome the Handsome Family into your life - you won't regret it.

Country music is the most enduring form of 'modern' music in the world today. Despite the best efforts of Hollywood (and English soap opera stars - 'Emmerdale') to ridicule it, it continues to exist and enjoy a strong musical following. The Handsome Family and the like are probably one of the reasons for this.
'In The Air' is an out and out country lp. Lyrically it is dark, poetic and amusing at the same time. Husband and wife songwriters Brett and Rennie Sparks are at the top of their creative tree. Their subject matter varies from the banal to the bizarre. Their delivery is musically perfect.
This lp is their most complete to date. 'Cold,Cold,Cold' is the most traditional song, recollecting great country songs of the past. 'A Dark Eye' and 'Passenger Pigeons' are more contemporary. This collection works so well from start to finish it is difficult to fault. It isn't as instant as its predecessors but, ultimately, it benefits fom this drawing on the melodic joy of 'Through The Trees' and 'In The Air' whilst losing nothing on the lyrics front.
Brett and Rennie have got something special. Their live shows are great, their lps a joy to behold. Re discover true country music. Don't expect to line dance, do expect to be impressed. Not since the deaths of Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt has country music sounded so good and fresh.
Long live the Handsome Family.

The problem with reviewing The Handsome's back catalogue is that it risks becoming boring, with me spouting superlatives about each and every album. Having only recently discovered them and listening to all their albums in quick succession (in preparation for a gig of theirs I attended last month) I decided to review each and every album and, for the first time, I'm struggling for words. This is their fifth studio album and I have now realised that there is nothing original to say. So I'll just have to recycle what I have said about their four previous releases. Twilight, yet again, is simply a wonderful album, with the usual effective mix of rock, pop, and ballads with a country feel. For your information, not to mention my music geekery, I'd rate this their second best album behind the mighty Through The Trees which I rated as 5 stars and which is one do my favourite albums of all time. This comes close...close enough to give it another 5 stars!

lyrically this would get 5 stars: it's very funny stuff, but the tracks vary greatly. Snow White Diner is superb, as is White Dog, though other tracks sail too close to traditional country for my taste.

not quite as dark as I was hoping, too many tracks verging on the bland side and the first is downright annoying. but there's some good stuff still.
