"Glitter" is, without doubt, the most exciting and adventurous album Mariah has made to date, recreating the sounds of the eighties with finesse, and it must be said, brilliant timing, for the eighties are back with a vengenace. "Glitter" is the soundtrack to Mariah's upcoming movie of the same name - a rags to riches story of a New York singer.
The upbeat songs are more upbeat than ever, thanks to help for the legendary Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Janet Jackson's longtime producers) and the ballads more emotional, yet not drenched in vocal acrobatics (a common yet unfair opinion held about Mariah's previous ballads). However, Mariah's voice IS on top form.
The jewel in the crown of "Glitter" must be the cover of Indeep's "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life", which features guest vocals from Busta Rhymes - when released, this will propel everyone onto the dance floor. Mariah's first single "Loverboy" suffered in the US charts due to lack of Airplay (hmmmmm Tommy's influence?) yet was number one in Sales - the less than satisfactory charting doesn't reflect what a great upbeat tune it is. As with her previous albums, "Butterfly" and "Rainbow", Mariah incorporates a lot of Hip Hop influences into her music, with guest vocals from Da Brat, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes and so on. Mariah is not simply following suit as some might say, for it was she, who in 1995, first blended mainstream pop and hip hop, with her "Fantasy Remix (featuring ODB)". This style of music is truly Mariah's to claim, and not for the critics attack her for.
If you like ballads in between all this funk, you can't go wrong with the moving "Lead The Way" or "Never Too Far" (Mariah's next single, which is already gaining huge amounts of airplay). Also, "Reflections" and the beautiful "Twister" (dedicated to Mariah's stylist Tonjua Twist) are sure to move people. In "Twister"'s lyrics, Mariah's own feelings are revealed, and the reasons for her recent breakdown can be understood: "Yeah I'm feeling kinda of fragile and I've got a lot to handle..."
Mariah Carey has suffered in the past from unfair comments made about her music, in spite of how wildly successful it is. With this album, Mariah will, thankfully, prove these critics wrong. It is a refreshing twist in a incomparable legacy. Can't wait for the movie.

The best from Mariah yet! I was hesitent to buy this after only one single being released, but BOY I'm glad I did! Each track is worth it's weight in gold. With beautiful balads like "Never Too Far" and jazzy numbers like "Didn't Mean To Turn You On" You can't go wrong. Buy this album

This is a great album from Mariah Carey!! She's always surprising you with the different styles she comes out with. You shouldn't think this is a bad album just because of the film (which also ain't as bad as they made it out to be) .... it's got the ballads and the music that you could just get up and dance to.. each song has a twist which makes it different to something you would hear everyday. Whether your a fan or not there is a song to suit everyone :) .... just don't think that its bad because of what the press say.

If Mariah hadn't done the film Glitter, and this hadn't been a Soundtrack for it, this album would have sold better. If people didn't just link this with the film and actually listened to the songs on here, you will find this is a VERY good album. With breathtaking ballads such as ' Lead The Way' and amazing cover version of 'Last Night a DJ Saved My Life' this is a truely all round album!
