My first surprise was finding the Holmes Brothers on the Alligator label, a label associated with more straight ahead blues music. My second surprise was to find that, in my opinion, the Brothers have produced their best ever album. But perhaps my greatest surprise was that I could actually fall in love with an album that has the name Jesus in four song titles. As a none-believer I have always shied away from "religious" songs. However, although the majority of tracks have a gospel flavour, they are performed with so much conviction and energy, that I feel positively uplifted everytime I play them. This is a powerful record; strong vocals, honey-sweet harmonies and blistering guitar, combined with a spot-on production from Joan Osborne make this a CD which should be in the collection of any serious music fan. There is so much joy running through this CD that I'm beginning to wish I was a believer! Go on make these old men (Wendell Holmes's description) happy, buy this CD, then you too can clap your hands, tap your feet and dance around the room to "Thank you Jesus", " Speaking in Tongues", "Jesus is the Way" and the old O'Jays hit, "Love Train". Praise the Lord, praise the Holmes Brothers!
