Mature album that is steeped in old Americana cool
on 9 November 2000
Alabama 3 provide less genre-hoping than on their stunning debut, 'Exile on Coldharbour Lane'. The sound fuses country, acid and blues but still manages to lay down a set of impressively 'real songs'. "Mansion on the Hill" is a hip-hop style country blast with an anthematic chorus and is the stand out track. The the far left-wing political stand of the group is toned down somewhat on La Peste, however "Cocaine (Killed My Communinity)" proves that mixing pop and politcs can work in the hands of talented artists. Where the debut album drew comparisons of Primal Screams seminal 'Screamadelica', 'La Peste' is the 'Give Out..'; back to the source for their own enjoyment. Not neccessarily ours, sadly.
