Based on the novel (which, personally, I found very hard going), by Dashiell Hammett, the movie sticks pretty close to its source material. Private investigator Sam Spade (a tough looking and talking Bogart) and his partner are hired by a "femme fatale", Ruth Wonderly (Astor), to find her missing sister. What follows is a complex story of murder, deception, betrayal and greed, with only the hard bitten detective emerging with any sense of morality. The supporting stellar cast include Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet.
I've now watched this three times and it is one of my very favourite Bogart movies, each time I watch it, I spot new things. Highly recommended, as part of any "Noir Night" or " Bogart Binge" session!

Bogart is on top form as the hard bitten private eye in this classic Film Noir. If you have never seen this film it is a must. "The stuff that dreams are made of"
