Good effort from modern-day folkster
on 6 January 2001
What with all the talk and the Mercury Prize nomination, I was expecting a lot from this CD. Maybe too much. But it does deliver on some levels. William's voice can be both strong and soothing, and she never resorts to over-the-top melodramatics. And the music is occasionally haunting, especially when it's at its most sparse. It's mostly a little on the cute side for me, though, and I can't help wishing life would deal Williams a few savage blows, just to up the stakes (sick, I know but, hey, music's IMPORTANT). Till then I think I'll stick with the more powerful, worldly and truly uplifting vision of Eileen Rose.
