It takes a while to get into this one. This is partly because of the weird and wonderful lyrics which Carthy sprinkles throughout her songs (I mean, what's 'Accordion Song' all about?)and partly because you don't really know what type of album you're listening to - undeniably folky, it also has elements of Jazz ('Stumbling On')and even a nod in the direction of Electronica ('Call Waiting'). However it rewards a second, third or even fourth listen and definitely grows on you. Well worth persevering with...

i bought red with the album rice and have for some reason always preferred rice, probably as its more of a traditional album.
the red album gave eliza carthy the chance to experiment a bit more and this album has grown on me through the years, there are some outstanding songs on this album, namely 10000 miles, walk away and adieu adieu which when played live have always been crowd pleasers.
eliza carthy has the knack of making a song her own, when she sings contempary cover songs and with walk away written by ben harper, its a far more richer interpretation of the song, than bens original.
hopefully eliza will continue pushing the boundaries of folk music further, because after a few plays, you realise red is a cracking album.

This is a great album that breaks rules as Liza did for a while, I love it but I am not a traditional folkie.
Red manages to fuse modern production and even dance remixing with some trad songs, the result is an album full of life and energy, it probably annoyed the finger in the ear crowd as irreverent or even irrevevant but it was the start of a move to give folk music back to the folk of the North East who where alienated from the cliche'd old styles with ganseys and finger in ear singing.
Red is an album that still sounds fresh but rooted in tradition, brilliant
