Masque
Format: Audio CD|Change

This album is so strange. The first 4 tracks are very much in the Mission mode and in my opinion are very strong - particularly Never Again which I love. But after track 4 the whole album changes and whilst the remaining songs are pleasant enough and very well produced, you couldn't really guess they were Mission tracks without buying the album. Great start but overall very disappointing.

It's a good album, despite all the haters.

Yes, it's not perfect, but there are some of the best Mission tunes of the 90's in there. Like a Child Again is a killer tune, a killer pop song, one of the best ever from the band.

Shades Of Green and Even You May Shine are also great, Hussey's voice is great and the melodies are superb.

Other good tracks: Never Again, Trail Of Scarlet, Until There's Another Sunrise...

Give it a try. It's worth it!

OK, first the bad news. This was a *real* big departure from the Mission's usual fare, in fact it's a stretch to call this album 'gothic' at all. And it doesn't really tie together like truly good albums should, you won't want to put Masque on 'Play All' on the CD player.

But the good news is that some of the tracks aren't that bad. Tracks like the opening 'Never Again' and 'Shades of Green' are catchy, sounding more like Siouxsie and the Banshees trying to be commercial than the Mission, admittedly. But what's so bad about that?

'Even you may shine' and 'Sticks and Stones' are good and 'You Make me Breathe' and 'Until there's another Sunrise' are very upbeat, feel-good pop songs. Not very Mission at all but I liked them. Overall I liked about half the tracks on the album so I'd advise anyone thinking of buying it to maybe preview the tracks first and buy a couple to see what they think. Heck, buy the first two songs as they will tell you everything you need to know about the album.

In short not the best Mission album ever but not the disaster that other reviews make out. Don't hate the Mission for trying to go a bit mainstream occasionally! Everybody does.

Really rather good.

But you would be forgiven for thinking you're listening to the Waterboys in places.

It has Jaz Coleman from Killing Joke arranging some of the strings.

Shame Hussey never really did anything much of note after this. Poor guy must have burned out.

Not sure what a "masque" is, but a "mask" hides something, this album definately hides what The Mission were about.

Even Wayne admitted this was the wrong direction for this band.

Not sure what else can be said, apart from please buy their other material, as it is worth owning - especially the awesome "Children" album.
