Interesting choices and a good look make this an above average thriller
on 2 November 2012
The plot is straightforward, the climax predictable, it follows the path laid out by similar movies where the yuppie, rich kids who think they know the world clash with the wild but free psychopath, first bonding then turning to horror. So why is this film so interesting? Perhaps it's in the casting, a wild turn from Brad Pitt, dropping the pretty boy image for a raw performance and baring all (more on that later), or David Duchovny who like Agent Mulder hiding behind that white shirt and tie has always had a dark side threatening to come out. The film is directed in a dirty grimy way with some great shots such as a climax in a bleached out nuclear testing ground or Brad Pitt completely naked in the rain digging a massive grave. Juliette Lewis and Michelle Forbes are good but they are hardly acting against type and you have seen them do the same thing in other films. Special mention to the sets and locations, be they cheap diners, old industrial warehouses or old farm barns that were once the site of mass murder the walls ooze sleaze and create a threatening atmosphere. This is aided by the good directing, lighting and cinematography.
This is a film well worth a watch and though it begins to become tiresome near the end due to it's predictable structure and a running time that could have had 15 minutes trimmed off I would still recommend it.
