Message In A Bottle died at the box office due to the ailing popularity of Kevin Costner. This is unfair when actors like Adam Sandler continue to get bums on seats even though their films themselves are of a very poor calibre (Wedding Singer- great but from then on....!)
Message In A Bottle features love lost and love found. Theresa (Robin Wright Penn) finds a heart-breaking love letter on a deserted beach. As Theresa is a journalist she decides to track down the author of the letter. When she finds him, she realises that this is the man that she has been looking for all her life. Garrett (Kevin Costner) is quiet but caring but he nurses a grief-stricken heart following the sudden death of his first wife. Theresa eases Garrett's pain and the two embark on a passionate love affair.
I know what you are thinking: Corny as Kansas! But despite the mawkish material, Wright Penn and Costner rise above this and the plot is not as treacle-covered as you may imagine. Sure there are many sad moments but there is plenty of light relief provided by Paul Newman as Garrett's cantankerous father and from Robbie Coltrane as Theresa's editor.
If you want to see a film that stays with you long after the credits have rolled, Message In A Bottle is the film for you. Leave your pre-conceptions at home, get yourself a bag of M&M's, a box of tissues, and a blanket- then you can wallow in this wonderul weepie!

I found it very good, but I hate bad ends. It is worth buying it if you like Kevin. Also good for the money invested and the delivery.

A movie that is happy and sad, funny and melancholic, optimistic but realistic, expected but unexpected, just what life is all about.
